Jewel Balti

Welcome to Jewel Balti, a gem nestled in the heart of Newport at 368 Chepstow Road, where vibrant flavors and rich traditions collide. As a food reviewer for Pops Café, I am thrilled to introduce you to this remarkable establishment that seamlessly marries the art of Indian cuisine with contemporary dining.

At Jewel Balti, the menu is a treasure trove of offerings, showcasing both classic dishes and adventurous new creations. The starters themselves present a captivating array of flavors, from the delightful Jewel Balti Tandoori Mixture featuring a mix of grilled meats and crispy onion bhaji, to the satisfying King Prawn Chilchila that promises to tantalize your taste buds.

  • Kalkata Naga: An exciting, spicy dish boasting tender hand-pulled chicken that challenges the palate.
  • Lal Toofan: A creamy, spicy sauce enveloping chicken or lamb, offering comfort with every bite.
  • International Jalfrezi: Bursting with vegetables and bold spices, this dish is a fiery celebration of flavors.

The variety found in their Jewel Favourites category is noteworthy. Whether you prefer the medium heat of the Jewel Balti Korai or the rich depths of the Murgh Tikka Jaipur, there’s something for every palate. The tandoori specialties, cooked in a traditional clay oven, are particularly impressive, as they allow the ingredients to shine with smoky undertones. I highly recommend the Tandoori Tikka—juicy pieces of meat marinated to perfection, served alongside fresh mint sauce.

What sets Jewel Balti apart is not just the food, but the experience itself. The restaurant boasts a contemporary and welcoming space, which Andy W recalls fondly in his reviews. It’s clear that the owners have taken significant steps to enhance the ambience, making it a perfect spot for takeout or a sit-down meal. Friendly staff greet you with warmth, ensuring that every visit is not just a meal, but a delightful experience.

As for those looking for lighter options, Jewel Balti also offers a range of vegetarian dishes like the aromatic Saag Paneer Balti and Crispy Cauliflower Curry, highlighting their commitment to inclusivity in flavors. And let’s not forget the enticing biryani selections—each dish, like the Jewel Balti Special Biryani, features fragrant basmati rice delicately flavored with saffron, promising a warming and hearty meal.

In conclusion, Jewel Balti is more than just a restaurant; it’s a culinary journey through India’s rich tapestry of flavors. Whether dining in or enjoying a takeaway, each visit is met with a delightful blend of spices, aromas, and genuine hospitality that will keep you craving more. So, next time you find yourself in Newport, do yourself a favor and indulge in the exquisite offerings of Jewel Balti—a true culinary jewel worth discovering.

Great to return to the Jewell Balti, having lived on Chepstow Road many years ago. Still run by the same people, who have made many improvements over the years, particularly following Covid, and catering predominantly for take-away customers rather than diners. But if you dine in, the space is contemporary and welcoming. The menu wide and varied; with many unique dishes. The staff friendly and attentive. At the time of writing (November ) there is no alcohol licence and you are welcome therefore to bring your own, which other diners seemed glad to be able to do. We had a great meal and look forward to returning. Allow £-£ per head for a main with sundries and a drink. Reasonable value, good environment, excellent, tasty and freshly prepares food. We look forward to returning. There is parking to be found on side streets, or a good bus service from the bus station.
